Guan Eng got carried away, says Johor leader after reprimand

PETALING JAYA: A Johor DAP leader who was slammed by Lim Guan Eng for criticising an MP for wearing a headscarf to a mosque said the party secretary-general missed the point he was trying to make.

Dr Boo Cheng Hau said Lim had got “carried away” by their internal discussion.

“The point is that we should not use attire for political mileage,” he said in a Facebook post, adding that such superficial gimmicks would only gain “temporary political mileage”.

Boo went on to say that when the party was short on resources, Johor DAP, including himself, donated money out of their own pockets to vernacular and religious schools.

“I did not have to wear religious headgear and outfit to appease anyone. I went only with a sincere heart to help each community.”

Boo, who is a state DAP committee member, said if one bent over backwards to appease a particular ethnic group and neglected the needs of others, they would not only be despised by his community but lose the respect of others.

He claimed that the Chinese community was upset with Lim over funding for Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC) which became an issue during Lim’s tenure as finance minister.

As FM, Guan Eng allocated RM100 million to Tahfiz (Islamic) schools whilst deliberately withholding traditionally annual matching-grant for TARUC which would have made student fees lower, as were enjoyed by TA\RUC alumni Teresa Kok, Chong Eng, Salahuddin Ayub

Guan Eng's politically driven parsimony towards TARUC compelled Penang hawkers to donate portion of their daily earnings to TARUC to ensure the community continued to support TARUC students in affordable fees

The community was upset with Lim for “putting partisanship above education and for being a ‘yes man’ to former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad,” Boo said. “If we try to be what we are not by over-appeasing anyone, that would actually be counterproductive to the party.”

Earlier today, Lim, in defending Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh donning a headscarf when visiting a mosque said Boo’s remarks were no different to those made before by “extremist and primitive PAS leaders”.

Lim also said Boo’s actions ran the risk of portraying DAP leaders as being intolerant and regressive and had shed a bad light on DAP.

Malaysiakini had reported that Boo made the negative remarks against Yeoh in a private WhatsApp group comprising Johor DAP leaders.

  1. Boo Cheng Hau has for a long time ceased saying anything on Malaysia's governance, The key Opposition role.

Instead he is playing Opposition to the Opposition.

Hmm...interesting what is going on behind the scenes.
