GENEVA – The International Olympics Committee said today its president had had a 30-minute video call with Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai, as international pressure mounted for information about her wellbeing.

“Today, IOC President Thomas Bach held a video call with three-time Olympian Peng Shuai from China,” the organisation said in a statement.

“At the beginning of the 30-minute call, Peng Shuai thanked the IOC for its concern about her well-being,” it said, adding that “she explained that she is safe and well, living at her home in Beijing, but would like to have her privacy respected at this time”.

“That is why she prefers to spend her time with friends and family right now. Nevertheless, she will continue to be involved in tennis, the sport she loves so much.”

The call came amid international concern for Peng’s wellbeing after she disappeared from public after alleging earlier this month that former vice premier Zhang Gaoli, now in his 70s, forced her into sex during an on-off relationship spanning several years.

Following a global outcry, including from tennis superstars and the United Nations, Chinese state media reporters have released a flurry of footage purporting to show all is well with Peng.

And official event photos showed she appeared earlier Sunday at a Beijing tennis tournament.

Bach had been accompanied on the call with her today by the chair of the IOC Athletes’ Commission, Emma Terho, and IOC Member in China Li Lingwei, who had known Peng for many years from her time in the Chinese Tennis Federation, the IOC statement said.

“I was relieved to see that Peng Shuai was doing fine, which was our main concern,” Terho said.

“She appeared to be relaxed. I offered her our support and to stay in touch at any time of her convenience, which she obviously appreciated.”

The call ended, the statement said, with Bach inviting Peng “for a dinner once he arrives in Beijing next January, which she gladly accepted, and the two agreed to include Emma Terho and Li Lingwei.” – AFP, November 22, 2021

  1. A person made an allegation that a Senior Leader of the Communist Party of China coerced her into sleeping with him.

She is not seen again for 3 weeks until the international community's demands for proof that she is safe

Don't be stupid to just see this as another Evil Yankee Program.

    1. an asian lady made a courageous effort in revealing a past crime against her (for whatever reason), but having done so, her asian mannerisms told her to stay in quiet privacy. What's wrong with that? She is not some brazen western woman who thrives on her new repute or notoriety.

and there's no denying that it has been the west particularly the US which has been making self-interestd drive to demand her presence in public

    2. An asian lady made a courageous effort in revealing a past crime against her by a Senior leader of an unaccountable authoritarian regime.

Having done so, she is practically "disappeared" from China social media, become a Non-Person.
She has likely been subject to severe pressure and threats to recant her revelations.
Her family , parents , are all in China. There are many ways to threaten her.

What's wrong with her fellow international tennis players taking up her cause demanding proof that she is safe ?

  3. Jack Ma was once predicted either he will be shot dead or will die in the jail. It turns out that he's still alive and well. And as recent as one or two months ago he was found in a farm in Holland looking into some new business venture!

When China largest property developer Evergrande Group went into financial difficulty, the whole western world was so excited, all the leading western media headlines predicted that China will face financial meltdown and demise of the Chinese government.

The 'moral' of the stories are the whole world were looking at China with prejudicial dark colour tainted lenses, all wishing to see China in turmoil.
