PETALING JAYA: Tey Kok Kiew is stepping down as Melaka DAP chief effective immediately after the party only won four of the eight seats it sought to defend in yesterday’s state election.

He also apologised for DAP’s loss at the polls, Malaysiakini reported.

“As the state party chief, I must be fully responsible for the results of the election,” he was quoted by the portal as saying.

Tey, who failed to defend the Bemban seat, said the decision to resign was a personal one.

He only managed to secure 3,095 votes, while Perikatan Nasional’s Yadzil Yaakub won the seat after garnering 4,211 votes in the five-cornered fight.

Tey will, however, remain with the party.

DAP won Ayer Keroh, Kesidang, Kota Laksamana and Bandar Hilir.

Amanah, meanwhile, won in Bukit Katil while PKR lost in all the 11 seats it contested in.
