Activists planning to lodge new round of police reports against controversial Muslim preacher Syakir Nasoha

KUALA LUMPUR – Activists who claim to have uncovered more videos of controversial Muslim preacher Syakir Nasoha making disparaging remarks about other religions are planning to lodge a fresh wave of police reports.

Global Human Rights Federation president S. Shashi Kumar said various NGOs and individuals nationwide will be filing the reports tomorrow with regard to several videos, one of which was uploaded just last week.

“It is obvious that he has no regrets. There are many more videos of him that can cause disharmony and disunity while disturbing non-Muslim faiths,” Shashi said when contacted by The Vibes today.

On October 1, a one-minute video of Syakir saying that “at the end of time, disciples of non-Muslim religions will be scrambling together to kill Muslims in the world” made the rounds on social media and WhatsApp. He specifically referred to Hindus, Buddhists and Dayaks wanting to annihilate Muslims.

Police reports have been lodged nationwide on this since last Sunday, including in Sarawak.

The state’s indigenous community leaders have questioned why the police in Peninsular Malaysia have not arrested Syakir for allegedly inciting racial and religious hatred.

Four days ago, Syakir posted an explanation video after numerous police reports were lodged against him by civil society groups and members of the public.

In his explanation, he claimed that the editing of his video caused the excerpts to be misunderstood. He added that the sermon was only meant for Muslims with no intention of having it recorded or shared with others.

However, Shashi claimed today that he has the full video whose contents are seriously seditious against other religions.

“How many others are there like him? Since they are not being monitored by the government, they are free to do as they wish,” Shashi said, noting that ministers have chosen to remain silent on the matter.

“Issues pertaining to Muslim preachers insulting and defaming other faiths and beliefs in Malaysia is becoming more frequent and the law seems to have a double standard when it comes to arresting them,” he said.

In a statement two days ago, Shashi had alleged that Syakir had held a Facebook Live session where he repeated his “hateful messages, which are full of stupid and easily disproven lies”.

Despite the video having been removed and the page deleted, he said that the 55-minute, 44-second clip had been obtained as another piece of “evidence”.

On October 6, Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk Seri Abdul Jalil Hassan had stated that police are investigating the viral video clip.

He said that the public is advised against speculating on the matter, and that action will be taken against individuals who deliberately threaten public order and security. – The Vibes, October 9, 2021
