Najib: COVID-19 cases getting severe, what is the Gov’t waiting for?

UPSET over the rising number of COVID-19 cases, former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak asked the Government on what would it take for the latter to do something about it.

“People are dying on the streets, in front their houses and clinics. Ambulances are not reaching places on time, hospitals lack space and we don’t have enough containers to keep the dead.

“These are our news headlines now. I can’t imagine what would happen when cases soar up to 24,000 daily, as projected under the National Recovery Plan (NRP),” he said in a Facebook post.

Yesterday, Malaysia recorded 17,786 cases on new COVID-19 infections, the highest so far, indicating that the highly contagious Delta variant is spreading beyond the Klang Valley.

The number of active cases now is nearing 190,000, with over 9,000 deaths recorded so far.

Many hospitals have gone public on the sheer magnitude of the problem, urging well-wishers to donate containers as their mortuaries have run out of space to keep dead bodies.

Yesterday, Malay daily Harian Metro confirmed that a person found dead on the streets of Pekan Tanjung Sepat, Kuala Langat, was due to COVID-19.

On that note, Najib urged the Government to act now by providing effective intervention methods to contain the coronavirus and help the overwhelmed public healthcare system.

He added that providing containers and “reopening and closing sectors” alone would not help to resolve the matter, given the dire situation.

“Hundreds die daily and we are talking about people’s lives here. They are not mere numbers and statistics that you provide to the public every evening,” the Pekan MP retorted. – Aug 1, 2021.
