KHAT pot calling AG kettle to resign

Focus Malaysia:

Step down if you can’t do your job, Kit Siang tells AG

By Lim Kit Siang

The Attorney-General Tan Sri Idrus Harun should resign if he could not convince the prime minister to co-operate with the Yang di Pertuan Agong and the Rulers, by reconvening Parliament before Aug 1 to win the war against the COVID-19.

The Parliament is required by the Federal Constitution to meet once in six months. As the last Parliamentary meeting was on Dec 17, Parliament must meet by June 17.

This was, however, suspended by the proclamation of Emergency on Jan 11, to combat the pandemic.

If the Emergency ends on August 1, then the Parliament should reconvene on August 2.

However, if the Emergency is extended after Aug 1, this would be clearly going against the wishes of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Malay Rulers.

The Rulers were clear on June 16, firstly that the Parliament and the State Assemblies should meet as soon as possible and secondly, there is no need for the Emergency to be extended beyond Aug 1.

The means we are about 41 days away to a Constitutional Crisis on Aug 2, if the Emergency is extended.

Malaysians do not want a Constitutional Crisis. We need a single-minded national effort to win the war against COVID-19 as more than 4,000 people in the country have died from the coronavirus.

Right now, Prime Minister Tan Sri Mahiaddin Yassin has very little credibility and legitimacy as head of Government.

If he goes against wishes of the Agong, the Rulers and the Malaysian people by insisting on the Emergency and proroguing the Parliament, he would end up with little credibility and legitimacy left.

The Attorney-General is the chief legal adviser to the prime minister. If the former cannot convince Mahiaddin to the right thing, then he should resign from his office. – June 20, 2021

kt notes:

It's funny Lim KHAT asking the AG to resign when he (KHAT) has thus far refused to resign himself (from politics) as he (KHAT) had pledged to do so if his matey Mahathir refused to hand over the PM post to Anwar. Sangat thick skin lah. Wakakaka.

  1. No, it's not comparable.

Lim Kit Siang is a politician, not holding any executive position.
Whatever your interpretation of his "promise" it was a political matter.

Idrus Harun, an executive office holder stands accused of failing to do his duty as Attorney General, a very serious allegation.

You have a deep bias against Lim Kit Siang, and are incapable of making objective views of him.

  3. Politicians make all kinds of promises. I agree that Lim Kit Siang should have resigned as stated but then, perhaps he can do more good staying.

If he did resign, his enemies would be sniggering and laughing at him for his naivete and stupidity.

But still he (LKS) should be punished for his stupidity in believing and trusting the old fool.

Could Parliament be suspended indefinitely, asks Kit Siang
    FMT Reporters -June 21, 2021

PETALING JAYA: DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang has expressed concern that there is a scenario for Parliament to be suspended indefinitely based on the conditions set out by Putrajaya under the national recovery plan.

He also questioned the Perikatan Nasional-led government’s sincerity in wanting Parliament to reconvene based on the three conditions it had set under its exit strategy from Covid-19.

Last week, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin announced that Parliament could only open in phase three of the national recovery plan, subject to there being less than 2,000 daily cases, the health system reaching a manageable level, and at least 40% of the population being fully vaccinated.

“What if one of these three conditions are not met, is Parliament to be suspended indefinitely?” Lim asked in a statement.

The Iskandar Putri MP said the prime minister’s promise to involve the opposition in a study on opening Parliament was also meaningless if the next session would only be held in September or October.

He said there was nothing for both government and opposition MPs to evaluate on the reopening of Parliament, as they were required to meet once every six months.

Lim added that Muhyiddin must give a commitment to convene the next session before Aug 1 to show that the executive was “not sabotaging the hopes of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Rulers” in fighting the pandemic.

He also pointed out that Dewan Negara president Rais Yatim had said the emergency ordinance 2021 gave the King authority to recall Parliament.

He said it was “unfortunate” that the Dewan Negara president was more vocal and articulate to the rights and privileges of Parliament than the Speaker himself.

“I call on the Speaker to represent the MPs to the executive, and not represent the executive in Parliament,” Lim said, referring to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Azhar Harun.
