Mahathir and his 'orang asing' obsession

Star Online:

Dr M's claim that MCA was extreme typical of his divisive tactics, says party veep

PETALING JAYA: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad accusing MCA and, by extension, its founding president Tun Tan Cheng Lock of being "extreme" is a typical example of the former premier's divisive tactics, says party vice-president Datuk Tan Teik Cheng.

"Like many of his previous remarks, Dr Mahathir’s statement is subjective and based on his own narrow point of view, omitting historical facts, and grossly out of context.

"It is using flawed rhetoric to slander one of Malaysia’s founding fathers, Tun Tan Cheng Lock.

"His intention is, of course, to use his usual tactics: to provoke conflict, hype up racial sentiments, and portray himself as a hero to certain people," Tan said in a statement on Monday (April 19).

He noted that MCA was set up before Independence during the Darurat (Emergency) period to help the local Chinese community and prevent the deportation of nearly 500,000 people while helping to rebuild their homes in the new villages.

He added that the party continued its work with its partners in the Alliance in the struggle for independence and later, securing power sharing and the community's identity in Barisan Nasional.

"Barisan guarantees the continuation of each ethnic group’s identity, that is, our respective cultures, languages and religions, while keeping pace with the times.

"These achievements have been recorded in the history books, and cannot be disputed," he added.

"He (Dr Mahathir) is still the kind of dictator whose thinking is 'Those who support me will prosper, but those who go against me will die'.

"That is why Dr Mahathir keeps praising Lim Kit Siang and Lim Guan Eng for becoming ‘no longer extreme', because during the Pakatan Harapan administration, the Lims were obedient and submissive to him," he said.

Two weeks ago, Dr Mahathir had said that if Umno could work with MCA, which was "once extreme", it could also consider working with DAP.

Dr Mahathir’s claim of MCA being "extreme" is thought to stem from the party's efforts to seek citizenship rights from the British colonial government prior to Independence.

Dr Mahathir Mohamad's remarks on how the Malays were forced to accept orang asing (foreigners) during British rule in exchange for independence is downright insulting and unbecoming of a prime minister who represents all Malaysians, said DAP lawmaker Ramkarpal Singh.

Ramkarpal was referring to the prime minister's speech at the Malay Dignity Congress, where Mahathir said:

“... Orang asing berasa selesa dengan negara kita dan mereka ingin tinggal di sini. Nak tak nak pun, kita terpaksa terima, kalau tidak kita tidak akan mencapai kemerdekaan.”

(Translation of above: The foreigners felt comfortable in this country and wanted to stay. Like it or not, we were forced to accept or we would not have achieved independence)

Mahathir's "orang asing" or "foreigners" refer to non-Malay Malaysian citizens (to wit, Chinese and Indian Malaysians)

  1. The good thing is that we don't have to listen to the old fool much longer given his age.

  2. Mahathir is a prisoner of his formative years, in the 1930s and 1940s.

Many Malays or those who consider themselves Malays, felt threatened by the high level of Chinese and Indian immigration into Malaya in the 1920 and 1930s. The Malay population of the Peninsular shrank to 50% at the time, and being mainly doing subsistence agriculture, they were unable partake in the commercial economy.

Mahathir can never leave that mentality behind, which is why he really must leave national politics, else it will be perpetually poisoned by the 1920's and 1930s attitudes.

Unfortunately, most Malay youths in their 20's today have also been trained into such racial politics as well.
