Perak Umno wants back seats held by PPBM top guns

Perak Umno wants back seats held by PPBM top guns

Perak menteri besar Saarani Mohamad wants to win back seats held by defectors to PPBM, including home affairs minister Hamzah Zainudin.

KUALA LUMPUR: Perak Umno wants to win back its former strongholds in Larut, Bagan Serai and Bukit Gantang, all held by PPBM top guns who defected from Umno.

Perak Umno chief Saarani Mohamad expressed disappointment that Umno members in these constituencies were “stolen” by PPBM.

“Umno members were stolen. Weren’t there other Malays for them to steal?,” he asked at the party’s general assembly.

Home affairs minister Hamzah Zainudin is Larut MP while deputy health minister Dr Noor Azmi Ghazali is Bagan Serai MP. The Padang Serai seat is held by Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal.

All three had won in GE14 under the Barisan Nasional ticket while being members of Umno.

“Umno Perak will contest in Larut, Bagan Serai and Bukit Gantang,” he said to a loud applause from the floor, and shouts of Hidup Umno (long live Umno).

Former Umno president Najib Razak was also seen seated at the front row among the audience.

Perak Umno backs Zahid

Saarani, the Perak menteri besar, also told delegates that the state Umno “wholeheartedly” backed president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi when he said the party would cut ties with PPBM, work with PAS and contest under the common banner of BN.

“We agree with the Umno grassroots that an election must be held immediately so a stable government can be formed to ensure the country’s prosperity,” he added.

He said Perak Umno also wanted to strengthen and protect their cooperation in the Muafakat Nasional coalition between Umno and PAS.

He warned of traitors within the party that “Umno will not be easily cheated”.

“They talk about unity but behind us they find ways to stab us. They are trying to split us,” he said.

Without mentioning names, he said “these characters” were not working with Umno to build bridges but for their self-interest.

On reasons for backing Muafakat Nasional and not the ruling Perikatan Nasional, he said the knot was tied with PAS when they were still in the opposition and they would like to continue protecting the relationship.

Asking members to learn from the mistakes of Pakatan Harapan which suffered a trust deficit, he said Umno “must be cautious of traitors”.

Meanwhile, Selangor Umno is hoping to avoid three-cornered fights, especially involving PAS, as it bid to regain the state it lost in 2008.

“We should not have three-cornered fights if we want to win in Selangor. If Barisan Nasional clashes with Perikatan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan, I worry that PH might win,” state party chief Noh Omar said at the Umno general assembly today.

He said Umno was already weak in Selangor with one parliamentary seat and five assemblymen, while PAS had only one state representative.

“So the spirit of Muafakat Nasional (MN) is vital to achieve the party’s dream to regain power in GE15.

“In Selangor, we will try not to clash (with PAS). If we do clash, I worry that what happened in the 14th general election will happen again.”

Noh also expressed hope that the MN political pact would remain in Selangor instead of BN going it alone. He hoped party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi would approve this request in Selangor, saying the political situation there was different compared to other states.
