‘I don’t want to fight with him,’ says Anwar, dodging Dr M’s criticism of him
Anwar Ibrahim says Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s views of him could change, quipping that the former PH chairman could criticise him one week and say something else the next.
KUALA LUMPUR: PKR president Anwar Ibrahim has dodged criticism from Dr Mahathir Mohamad, saying he does not want to get into a fight with the former prime minister.
This comes after the Langkawi MP slammed Anwar for being untrustworthy over unfulfilled promises, after the PKR president’s claim to have the numbers to form a new government in September last year led to nothing.
During a press conference today, Anwar kept the door open to working with Mahathir again to topple the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government, saying Pakatan Harapan (PH) will not base its cooperation with other MPs on parties or individuals but on principles.
When asked about the criticism levelled against him by Mahathir, he declined to comment.
“Never mind, we’ve known for him so long. But for PH and PKR, we are open to anyone or any party which accepts good governance and rejects corruption and cronyism. I don’t want to fight with him.
“Our responsibility is to strengthen the opposition and invite our other comrades to join forces. Whether they want to join us or not is up to them, we can’t force them to say yes, but we are open.”
He also said Mahathir’s views could change with time, quipping that the former PH chairman could criticise him one week and say something else the next.
When asked to comment on Mahathir saying PH needed him in order to attract Malay support at the next election, Anwar pointed out that Pakatan Rakyat had managed to garner 52% of the popular vote during the 13th polls in 2013, suggesting that Mahathir was not desperately needed by PH.
