Rafizi says NO to Mahathir's personal obsession & dictatorial announcement

Malaysiakini - Rafizi tells gov't to reconsider third national car (extracts):

PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli has urged the government to reconsider its plans to launch the country's third national car project by 2020.

In a statement, Rafizi said the matter should undergo deliberation at the Pakatan Harapan presidential council before being brought before cabinet.

"I am worried that the federal government wants to press on with the project amid clear voices of discontent. Pakatan Harapan was chosen on a platform of reducing the people's burden.

"While the rakyat is still giving Harapan the opportunity to fulfil the promises in its manifesto – although not all can be reached in 100 days – implementing something so unpopular and so in contrast with Harapan's pledges will only give rise to cynicism," he said.

Entrepreneur Development Minister Mohd Redzuan Yusof announced on Saturday that the government is set to launch the national car project 3.0 by 2020, as envisioned by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Redzuan had said that the government believes that the move could revitalise the national automotive industry.

'Nowhere in the manifesto'

Rafizi also reminded that the now-defunct Pakatan Rakyat had in its 13th general election manifesto, or Buku Jingga, pledged to abolish the "burdensome" excise duty on vehicles.

"Excise duties were connected with efforts to protect national cars, but ended up making cars more expensive than in other countries.

"The basic platform to abolish the excise duty, to bring down car prices, has not changed since Harapan was conceived.

"Nowhere in Harapan's campaign, nor in its manifesto, does it mention the setting up a third national car project," said the former Pandan MP.

Therefore, Rafizi urged the government to take into account several considerations before setting up the project.

"I am of the opinion that a third national car project will have a huge financial impact on the people.

"We need to look into how much public funds will be used, which government body or agency will be tasked to handle this project, and whether the federal government intends to abolish the excise duty to bring down vehicle prices once the third national car project is launched," he said.

  1. Of course, Of Course.

Pakatan Harapan is not a dictatorship.

Before any actual investments and expenditures are made or any new tariffs imposed, the National Car idea would be thoroughly debated.

I still don't expect it to take off.

  2. I don't see how PKR/DAP/Amanah, with more than 100 seats between them, will allow the Bersatu leader with 14 seats, and elevated to PM at their generosity, to dictate like he did before during his first tenure, when he presided UMNO/BN with 2/3 parliament majority. With just a flick of a vote they can make someone else PM. Now even a mere mortal Rafizi, not even an MP, can scold the PM over the Tin Milo Proton.

This is democracy, Check and Balance, Like the Dacing, Only Better,
    I'm Lovin It !!

  3. This guy got balls to say it loud against Ceasar's wishes unlike the other PH leaders.

It's called freedom to voice out/speech over riding other considerations of kaki-bodek, respect, worship etc when he sees something as a nonsensical, burden and against his conscience.

New Malaysia needs Malaysians like him to prevent feudalism, autocracy creeping into the old ways by old leaders.

  5. Another example that the New Government has Check and Balance and practices democracy by voicing the will of the people. This never have happened under BN. Whatever UMNO Supreme Council decided all Cabinet members and BN MP's say "Yes Sir No Sir Three Bags Full".

Deputy minister says BTN to undergo ‘rebranding’, DAP MPs say no

BTN was an agency under the Prime Minister’s Department established to instil patriotism and nationalism among the civil service and university students.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 6 — The controversial National Civics Bureau (BTN) will not be abolished but fine-tuned and rebranded, the government said today.

During the winding up of the Royal Address in Dewan Rakyat today, Deputy Minister in Prime Minister’s Department Mohamed Farid Md Rafik promised to rebrand and fine-tune BTN.

“In line with the political changes, BTN’s module and curricular will be fine-tuned and it is being rebranded with emphasis on good values while going back to its original duties and objectives,” Mohamed Farid said.

However, DAP lawmakers RSN Rayer (Jelutong) and Kasthuriraani Patto (Batu Kawan) challenged Mohamed Farid’s defence, saying that the abolishment of BTN was among the promises that Pakatan Harapan (PH) made during the 14th general election which led them to victory.

“Originally, BTN was an agency under the Prime Minister’s Department to instil patriotism and nationalism among the civil service and university students. But now, it has become a bad agency which used its entire budget to promote racism, accusing DAP of being a racist party.

“It was evident that BTN was abused by its BN administrators and there is no guarantee that BTN won’t be abused this time. We saw how it started and how it ended up,” the Batu Kawan MP said.

“We don’t need an agency to educate civil servants to love their country, to love other Malaysians... it is in Rukun Negara not to discriminate.

“We don’t need this redundant agency in the Prime Minister’s Department, which is being paid for by taxpayers, when you have Rukun Negara,” Kasthuriraani added.
