Voting age to 18?

The Coverage - Tun Mahathir Suggests Malaysia Lowering Voting Age To 18 (extracts):

The Pakatan Harapan (PH) government may lower the voting age from 21 to 18, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad suggested today.
In an exclusive interview with Malay Mail, the prime minister said the suggestion would be an acknowledgement of the strong political awareness shown by young voters in the 14th general election last month that saw Barisan Nasional (BN) ousted after six decades.

“I think it is worthwhile to consider that,” he said, referring to lowering the voting age.

“We follow the practice in other parts of the world. It’s a big jump from 21 to 18, but it is a manifestation of our belief that people are better educated and they can make a judgment.”

Under normal circumstances I would have supported his proposal.

But given the unruly behaviour of the local Hell-Hounds who don't know their political history, I object because those under 21 will definitely be immature, wakakaka and liable to exploitation by snake-oil salesmen, wakakaka again.

  2. If he had lowered the voting age during his 1st reign, he wouldn't have lasted so long to earn the nickname Pharaoh of Malaysia.

    1. Inter-generational memory loss as electoral strategy.

But completely unnecessary since it occurs within a single lifetime in our case.

  4. I support this move, come what may.

When the U.S. lowered the minimum voting age from 21 to 18 in 1971, the view in Malaysia was that if Malaysia followed suit it would be to the benefit of leftist and opposition parties, so it was not done.

However, if Malaysia does lower the minimum voting age to 18 today as Mahathir proposed, this could either way come GE15, since youth who come of voting age by then may be radicalised in the other direction towards the opposition, which now happens to be UMNO and PAS, plus whatever is left of any other BN parties. Also, not to forget independent parties on the left such as PRM and PSM.

If this present Pakatan government screws up the economy, resulting in rising unemployment and higher prices by the time GE15 comes around, there will perhaps be quite a lot of angry youth and voters in the rural and semi-rural constituencies who gave Pakatan the seat with the largest minority of votes in three-cornered fights with UMNO and PAS, and all it takes is a small shift in voter sentiment away from Pakatan for either UMNO or PAS to win the seat.

Also, if Mahathir has either passed away or is incapacitated by old age and no longer active in politics come GE15, the "Mahathir factor" may no longer be there to swing his loyalists' votes towards Pribumi/Pakatan.

  5. There will be no objection from PAS. Tahfiz/religious institution students would be an advantage to PAS. But the constitution stated that the voting age is 21. We can dream on it.

  6. Yes this is great stuff. Another sign that todays TDM is not the same as the previous one. He would never have allowed 18-year olds to vote. Today he allows discussion. He now listens to advice.

Example last week LGE whispered into the old man's ear.

"Tunsie...Proton kepunyaan kita. 50.1% owned by DRB-HICOM. So Proton is a Malaysian car. What's the fuss all about. Just change the management a bit. Put a few Malaysian faces at the top, cukup-lah."

The new TDM listened to LGE's advice. Yesterday he met with DRB-HICOM and Geely management to discuss how to make Proton even more Malaysian. Good job !

  7. All eyes on the UMNO elections next weekend. Not that it would be relevant to Malaysian politics but to see which way UMNO members choose to oblivion. The KuLi way, or the KJ way or the Zahid way.

KuLi (the Nearly Man's) way is Same Same but Different. If you knew the way why didn't you do anything for 43 years? Slow Death.

KJ's way is the Ultimate Malay No Organ way. Multiple organ (warlord) extraction. Get rid of everything and reboot with empty shell. Then invite unhappy Pribumi, PKR and PAS members to repopulate the body. Let's see who extracts who. Will the warlords extract him instead.

Zahid's way is No Way. Actually No Idea Way. Just copy and paste. That's why he wants to debate only via video conference from Bagan Datuk. Where he will have answer slips secretly passed to him where Gobind's RTM cameras cannot catch.

Actually the best way was a suggestion from PAS. All UMNO members just resign and join PAS. But what will happen to all the money in UMNO? Cannot bring to PAS. It's dirty money. Haram. Or is it. Maybe can purify then bring over.

But the likely way is the Haniff Kathri way. Via ROS and Court. UMNO declared an illegal party and all the elections (party and GE14) will be a waste of time.

Bring It On. I'm Lovin It.

    1. The thought had crossed my mind that after the elections are over, it may begin to kick arse on issues with the present Pakatan government, even to the extent of holding street rallies and demonstrations, such as demanding lower prices and cost of living, and will the Pakatan government then either allow the ralles and demos to proceed unhindered as they had been demanding when in opposition or will they let the police crack down like they did to Pakatan protestors during the time of the BN government.

  8. There isn't a strong correlation between mental maturity and bioligical age.
You have 40-over year olds like Ktemoc who blog like a teenager.

    3. The people that Ktemoc calls Hell Hounds may be a bit overenthusiastic about expressing their political views.

However, they are objectively and morally far superior to the Crooks and Kleptocrats that Ktemoc seems to have a soft spot for.
