The Achilles heel of Anwar Ibrahim

When you read Malaysiakini Roadblocks cause gridlock in KL where you are told that at least 600 police personnel manned roadblocks along major roads leading to Parliament … yadda yadda … in anticipation of protests ahead of a possible PKR initiated debate of no confidence in PM AAB, and the recent Protes rally, etc, you would not be blamed for believing the general election must be just a few weeks away, when it had been over since 09 march 2008.

When you read Malaysiakini Parliament turns into a 'war zone' where the police had obtained a court order barring Anwar Ibrahim and his supporters from coming within 5 km of Parliament House, you would also be forgiven for not realising that the BN headed by PM AAB had won 140 parliamentary seats in the recent election in March 2008, while Pakatan Rakyat headed supposedly by Anwar Ibrahim, and claimed by his supporters as being on the ‘cusp’ of becoming the new PM, had won only 82.

It’s almost 1998 all over again or the aggravation of the Ijok by-election magnified to national scale - what's just missing would be the water bottle battle! See my Ijok - glimpses of Vision 2020.

Behind the unusual (or is it?) turmoil after a very recent general election, where the margin of the majority for the ruling party is a respectable and comfortable 58 seats, must be an explanation for the continuous agitated political instability – an instability that has unmistakably at its core the central figure of Anwar Ibrahim, a man whom I suspect is extremely dissatisfied with his personal* lack of political progress.

* by contrast the Pakatan Rakyat (exclusive of the person of Anwar Ibrahim) did very well to wrestle 5 States away from the BN and to deny the BN a 2/3 majority in Parliament, in any language two very commendable achievements.

In Greek mythology Achilles was the greatest warrior on the Greek side in the Trojan War. When he was still a baby, his mother Thetis, a sea nymph (an immortal) wanted to make him immortal as well by bathing him in the Styx, a magical river which formed the boundary between Earth and Hades, the mythological underworld.

But because she held him by one of his heel as she dipped him into the Styx, that heel was not bathed with the magic waters of the river and remained mortal and vulnerable.

During the Trojan War, he was basically (almost) invincible until he was fatally wounded in the same (unbathed) heel by an arrow shot by Paris, son of King Priam of Troy.

Thus an Achilles’ heel is a fatal weakness (metaphorically not physical only) in spite of overall strength, actually or potentially leading to downfall.

Anwar Ibrahim has an Achilles heel, and on this I don’t want to hear any of those salacious comments pertaining to recent events.

In my opinion, Anwar’s Achilles heel has been and still is his impatience.

Coupled with his excessive political ambitions, his Achilles heel had been and will be his downfall.

I will use the starting point of this discussion to refer to Chinese daily Guang Ming's interview of Raja Petra Kamarudin (RPK) of the influential blog Malaysia Today (note blog’s new URL) sub-titled ‘Anwar Should Not Have Challenged Tun Ghafar Baba’.

RPK wrote (relevant extract):

Anwar's power within Umno was strengthened after he became the Umno Youth Chief. But he was too ambitious and wanted to challenge Tun Ghafar Baba for the position of Deputy Umno President.

Raja Petra and many of Anwar’s friends did not agree with Anwar challenging Ghafar as they felt he should wait until the Deputy President retires.

“We all knew that Ghafar would not become the Prime Minister. He was nine months older than Dr Mahathir and his education background was only standard six. But Malays respected him, as he was one of the fighters for the independence of Malaya.”

“Malays have deep respect for Ghafar. You don't just overthrow him like that. Anwar should have given Ghafar more time to resign on his own. Therefore, I didn't agree with the young Anwar challenging Ghafar. I think he was showing no respect to an elder.”

Thus, Raja Petra and Anwar parted ways. He and his friends no longer wanted to help Anwar in his campaign for Deputy President.

“However, Anwar had strong support from Umno Sabah. At that time there was a bonus system in which a candidate would automatically receive 10 bonus votes for every nomination. The situation was very unfavourable to Ghafar so he stepped down to allow Anwar to take over.”

Here was Anwar’s impatience showing through where he humiliated one of the UMNO ‘Angkatan 46’ mercilessly into political oblivion.

It was said that during the triumphant celebration in UMNO headquarters where every UMNO personality rushed towards surrounding the new Crown Prince, poor discarded Ghafar Baba, the ‘deposed’ No 2 UMNO man was seen shuffling on the sideline by himself in an abject state of humiliated daze and shamed confusion, clutching in his arms a plastic shopping bag like a vagabond, yes, a political vagabond.

While the Bodek-ites did their sycophantic acts, they did not fail to see the self esteem of Ghafar Baba, or whatever was left of it, smashed to smithereens, with the senior party man sadly and totally humiliated by an ambitious and very impatient young rising star, who spared no mercy for one of the UMNO ‘pioneers’.

Anwar couldn’t even wait for (then) 70 year old Ghafar Baba to leave in more dignified manner. But undoubtedly, as RPK said, the Malays saw with grave trepidation an 'ugly' ambitious Anwar without any respect for his elders.

I won’t go into his tenure as the Education Minister where many non-Malays still remember what he had done to us.

Then in 1998, Anwar's close associate, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (the Pemuda UMNO Chief), gave notice that the Youth Wing would initiate a debate on ‘cronyism and nepotism’, obviously a move by the Anwar faction to nudge Dr Mahathir out a.s.a.p.

It's Anwar's impatience again, wanting to assume the No 1 political position without any delay. So the plan was to push Dr M out of office through the embarrassment of exposed ‘cronyism and nepotism’.

It’s amazingly silly considering that Dr M had felt comfy giving rein of the nation to Anwar just a year back and was actually on the verge of retiring.

Yes of course the storyline after Anwar's sacking portrayed Dr M as being fearful of his own position, etc, but I am inclined to believe the aggravation between the two had been due to Anwar's noted impatience and the impossible-to-notice lack of respect for his mentor-father figure.

Well, as they say, there’s many a slip ‘twixt cup and lips, which Anwar Ibrahim was to realized painfully; and I suspect, he must have since bitterly borne that ‘slip’ in great agony, a terrible cancer of woeful regret consuming him more and more each day as he realized that through his impatience to get rid of Mahathir to ascend to the No 1 position, he missed just by a hair's breath of becoming PM of Malaysia.

Oh, sedikit saja lah, sangat sayang leow, woe had been him! But alas, a miss is as good as a mile!

He had moved too swiftly and precipitously, because Dr M, on seeing the same disrespect to elders that Anwar had amply demonstrated in 1993 against Ghafar Baba, mounted a blitzkrieg counter-attack against his anointed heir. As Wikipedia states:

The response was swift, as Mahathir issued lists of cronies who had benefited from government share allocations and privatizations. To the chagrin of Anwar and his allies, several of them were on the list, including Anwar and Zahid.

Well, well, well …

As RPK had told Guang Ming:

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim changed after he became the Deputy Prime Minister cum Finance Minister. Umno changed him, said Raja Petra Kamarudin. He became just another “Umno man”.

“He wore RM3,000 suits, unlike the time when we wore traditional Malay costumes. Before he joined the party he said he wanted to change Umno but instead he was the one who was changed by Umno,” Raja Petra said.

Thereafter, Raja Petra did not get involved with Anwar any longer but instead became active in Pas.

He wrote for the English Section of Pas' Harakah and in some of his pieces he even criticised Anwar. Anwar was really angry at that time. When Anwar was sacked in 1998, he told Anwar that: “You deserve it! You can challenge Ghafar Baba, but not Mahathir.”

Raja Petra said that Anwar thought after easily overthrowing Tun Ghafar Baba he could easily depose Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as well. Eventually, he failed and Dr Mahathir did him in instead.

Anwar brought the whole Humpty Dumpty wall down on his head because he couldn’t just wait for a few more months for Dr Mahathir to retire. He thought he had everything in UMNO sown up.

Due to his impatience and his miscalculations, and not forgetting his disrespect for his elders, he fell on his own UMNO keris.

Of course when he was expelled he metamorphosed OVERNIGHT into a political reformer wakakaka … how can he expect people, even if they hadn't already experienced his (Education) ministerial tenure and policies, to believe him?

As I have often blogged, he wants to return to UMNO, which has been why he was coy with AAB after his release from prison. He must have thought he would be doing AAB a favour by targeting Najib, or maybe he saw the UMNO No 2 position as a convenient political resurrection point for himself, provided of course he can get rid of Najib.

But AAB and many others who know of him don’t want him. If he could do what he had done to Ghafar Baba and even his godfather Dr M, God knows what he could do to them. His impatience has become legendary (or notorious).

Then perhaps he thought if the BN lost its 2/3 majority and his PKR inner group has enough seats to restore that 2/3 he could still pry his way back in. But AAB wasn’t about to play ball - better to be without the 2/3 than with Anwar in UMNO.

Anwar's Achilles heel is showing through again, refusing to wait for the next general election – of course there are other factors as well which I will blog on tomorrow. Hence the PKR's almost daily broadcast about pending party defections … perhaps to pressure other UMNO stalwarts if not AAB, but wakakaka, they sneakily (and more wisely) turn towards PAS instead of Anwar.

Expect him to continue and even escalate his campaign of political destabilization, as he becomes more frantic with the approaching September 16 in just 2 months time.

And Malaysiakini has just published 'Opposition had planned demo today' where it reported Home Affairs Minister Syed Hamid claiming that, this month alone, his ministry has received information that numerous demonstrations were to be staged by the opposition (he probably meant PKR) with the sole purpose of toppling the government.

Aiyoyo, Anwar, where's your man man lai? Just like your reformasi?

  2. It is well written and from my own personal experience with Anwar the facts you outlined are more or less correct. Impatient is his Achilles heel. But then he could not proceed with his climb up in UMNO if he did not get the tacit support of Dr Mahathir who also played out Ghaffar after making use of him in !987. But KTEMOC that is politics. No honest or sincere person can survive in this jungle of politics.I am wary of Anwar and them but I don't hate them.

  3. Jeyklls and Hydes in Malaysia. Are you? (Updated 14 July 2008)

Malaysians in dilemma? So many events and news both real and unreal. Don’t know who to believe? Bombarded with too much spins. These are the quotes, we now hear.

“Give up”, “Fed up”, “Wait and See”, “Lost interest”, “Headache”, “Cannot believe anyone”, “Who to believe ah?”, “Niamah”, “Pening kepala”, “Pening otak”, “Sudah lah”, “Pi mampus”, “Insyallah (God Willing)” or raise your palm and fist and put them together on National tv or www.Youtube.com or www.malaysiakini.com or www.Malaysia-today.net or other blogs.

Why? Because it depends on what you want to perceive and your bias toward your own race, color, religion, party, groups, interests, superiority or plain dumbness.

That makes you something of a Jeykll and Hyde if you can’t differentiate between facts and fictions, good and evil, right and wrong, true or false. Too many Malaysians can’t decide now whether to become Jeykll or whether to become Hyde or when to become Jeykll or when to become Hyde.

Think hard and search your conscience from deep within and “Viola” you can differenciate between Night from Day. Throw out bias towards race, creed, superiority, affiliations, religion and beliefs, greed, power, cronyism etc and then see whether some of the things happening around is right or wrong , true or false, evil or good, facts or fiction.

    Yes, Anwar has his faults...

But he is one of the prime of the democratic movement in Malaysia!

Can you imagine 50,000 people protesting for reformasi before 1998?

If not for his actions in 1998, we might not have all 'these' (a credible opposition that denied 2/3 majority to the ruling establishment) right now...

And to my dear Ktemoc, I actually respect your writings...

I sincerely hope you can do away with all these attacks to Anwar Ibrahim... I mean less personal attacks please...

Instead we (bloggers and other cyber identities) should write more about bigger issues with regards to democracy and governance..

Do write about institutions of democracy, about policies (i.e. price of oil, subsidy, NEP etc) and yes, criticise Anwar on policy issues, but please don't write about or emphasize on personal issues...

  12. Dear Ktemoc,

You seem to have conveniently forgotten the fact that Anwar never had the crossovers in mind in the immediate aftermath of the Mac 8 polls, this matter suddenly appeared out of the blue from a question asked by a foreign correspondent a few days after the polls when rumors starting circulating that Sabah and Sarawak MP's have started contacting Anwar to discuss the possibility of crossing over. It now seems that at one stage more than 18 Sabah and Sarawak MP's were considering crossing over. Its also pretty clear now that thanks to the BN mole Saiful, probably the name of every BN MP's who ever considered crossing over is now known to the BN leadership. Notwithstanding those MP's who truly believe in Anwar and his message, its clear that there is no more than 5-10 MP's who is still willing to cross over. Anwar from aftermath of the election, has always maintained that his immediate priority is to ensure that the Pakatan led state government is up and functioning and able to fullfill election pledges, he set the standard by pledging that PR state governments will not spend lavishly renovating offices and homes and buying new cars, CAT was emphasized. Tell me any UMNO or BN leaders who talked about this matters. Also the antics of the Federal government from Azalina (who made the stupid comment that PR led states will get funding if they join BN) to Pah Lah and Nor Mohd Yacoop who have slashed Penang's funding under the 9th Malaysia plan by 80%, it very clear that instead of practising mature democracy, the federal leadership is out to settle score. Combined with the fuel rise of 41%, in Anwar's shoe anyone would think of ways to bring down the current government

  18. This is a persuasive post by KT.

However, the bigger cause requires us to see the bigger picture which currently the onlyleader with the ability to articulate and move the people and the country is AI.

The alterantive scenario is what after AAB? WOuld AI had been a better reformer? - A question we may have to force oursleves to ask at that pont in time.

So the decision is now. Is UMNO capable of reforming itself or should AI and PR better for our future?

My only reservation with AI is his outlook on Education. It vexes me terribly to note that he wishes to revert Maths and Science to Malay.

His demagogic ways are going to kill his chance of becoming the next PM and I truly believe he can't be trusted to run this country.

He talks about cleaning up the government of corruptions but look who are some of his good friends overseas,Joseph Estrada,Paul Wolfowitz and few others. These are unsavoury characters.

If he has principles and sincerely believes in it, he wouldn't be close friend to known crooks.

Corruption - ACA currently going after the D-G of the Immigration department.

I believe we are privy to very little of the 'truth' of what is happening now. It is so out there, it is beyond us. Our best bet is to observe, listen, and be informed.

RM$3.0 bil is supposed to come home and there is some 15 or 20 times of that out of the country. Many UMNO/ BN members are suspect, with exceptions, surely. RM100.0 bil can buy us some 6 mths of food from abroad for the nation and here we are being made to pay rising rice and fuel prices. That wealth should have been ours, in all its manifestations, to tide things over now and in the coming hard times.

In the hot tropical climate that we are in we should have some 0.01% of the population that can lead us out of this quagmire. The dynamics is whether constancy as the North Star is a myth. Even stars change.

For those who may be thought of as the "conservatives" of the spectrum isn't it clear that what the BTN and the Police are spewing out is an obstacle to national betterment? The system appears on a blink and hardly any sign indicates any other mode except denial.

    Article 1;
PM welcomes PAS' willingness to discuss Malay issues
    By JANE RITIKOS , Star
    Monday July 14, 2008 MYT 7:16:12 PM

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has welcomed PAS' statement that it is willing to hold discussions with Umno on Malay issues and Islam, describing it is "a good and important move".
Abdullah, who is Umno president, said that there were issues that the two parties which represent the Malays need not bicker about, especially those relating to the race and Islam.
"If we have more understanding on these issue than the Malays will also have less problems," he said in response to PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang interview with Harakahdaily in which the latter said PAS was willing to sit down with Umno to discuss issues of mutual interests.
Abdullah, who was speaking to reporters after opening the National Summit on Urban Poor and Low Income groups Monday, said everyone would agree that more should be done for the good of the Malays by addressing issues affecting them.
However, he said the Malays too, had to take into consideration the interests of non-Malays.
He acknowledge that there was previous talk of a similar discussions between the two parties and hoped that it would come true this time.

    Article 2:
PARLIAMENT, July 15 — DAP leaders distanced themselves from the alleged anti-government demonstration planned for yesterday. In a carefully-worded statement to the Press, they did not deny or confirm if there was a meeting organised by "other parties" but they said the DAP was definitely not a part of it.

PAS doesn't see eye to eye with PKR see recent interview with Tok Guru
Different ideology , recent malee in Kelana Jaya Stadium involving the the rock band Black Metal show proves this .
When the Anwar sodomy issue came out , PAS and DAP was at the side lines , doing nothing , just watching not a word or show of support .

Better face reality than having false hopes .
so PR you want to form the govt , Day Dreaming .
Anwar you want to be PM , also Day Dreaming .
Better change your drama scripts , its only suitable for Hollywood or Bollywood .

Here are the other dramas courtesy of PR .

The fact that DAP and PKR and PAS running the five states has shown that there are short comings in the way they run the State Governments .

PKR - Selangor already having problems with several issues like the suspension and eventual sacking of the Menteri Besar's aide for soliciting funds thru the use of the MB's letter heads , the award of rubbish collection contracts , the appointment of councillors etc etc .

PAS - In Kedah awarding contracts for logging in water catchment areas which will probably affect the water catchment areas in Penang as Penang draws a lot of its water from the Kuala Muda River . These PAS Govt are quite adamant in wanting to proceed to give concession to logging companies to log for timber at water catchment areas . Water is a prime comodity now and water issues are important to the state .Big issue on this if they go ahead , we are watching .

DAP - Penang , we have Guan Eng talking like a opposition gun slinger forgetting that he is running the government . Issue is when the Federal Government decides to cancel the PORR and Monorail he came out gun blazing demanding that Pak Lah gives Penang RM4.7 Billion to allow them to do the projects on their own in the MSM . He has forgotten that the people who voted for him DID NOT want the PORR project , especially in those areas like Jesselton Heights , Gottlieb Rd and Gurney Drive . On top of that you think Pak Lah will give him the money thru his demands in the main stream medias ?? He must be an ass to do that . If PM were to give him , PM is finish , giving in to demands by the DAP . On the other hand he should have gone quietly to PM's office and talk to him like a son talking to his father . Papa give me some money , nobody around to hear you asking for money , only you and him . If he decides to give you at least he won't loose face . UMNO people in Penang won't say that Pak Lah very soft , everything also give understand or not Guan Eng ?? , talk to PM and maybe , I repeat MAYBE might get one of the two projects . ? Further I were you I will only request for the money for the MONORAIL . But now you can considered it as GONE from the INEXPERIENCE Penang CM .

Anwar Ibrahim is just a private citizen. No official position, no power.

Kitty when you are a PUBLIC figure , you are publicly owned , you are no longer a private citizen .

Moreover if there's no rally there should not have been any road blocks and hence no chaos .
Because of the planned rally , it became necessary to have the road blocks .

The responsibility for the chaos in Kuala Lumpur yesterday DID NOT lie in the hands of the people who ordered it , it lies in the hands of the people planning for the rally . The police were just doing their job to maintain law and order .

You won’t go into his tenure as the Education Minister where many non-Malays still remember what he had done to us.

Maybe I'll say something on this :

When Anwar was Education Minister he was responsible for the conversion of all communications between government departments and letters to government agencies and departments from English to Bahasa . Most of the subjects in schools were all converted and taught in Bahasa . That was why our standard of education dropped .University Malaya used to be the top university in the region . Heaven knows what position it is in now . Maths and science were then taught in english but changed to bahasa by him and now this ding dong , with the falling standards back to english and now we have people demanding it to be taught in the mother tongue and bahasa. I recall that very well . Look at our locally produced graduates , can't even talk proper english .

Besides the schools Anwar also was responsible for the usage of Bahasa in the courts with lawyers requiring to speak in Bahasa during court and in court .Those who could not speak fluently were required to attend special classes for legal words and terminology in Bahasa . That's part of the reason we lost Batu Puteh .Half past six lawyers representing Malaysia internationally .

When he was Finance Minister almost all his family members , father , mother became directors of listed companies , not one but many many. This is common knowledge in Penang . Every year during Hari Raya you'll have dozens of corporate MDs and CEOs trying to outdo each other ,see who's the earliest waiting in front of his house to wish him hari raya . Ya Goh Chun Lai , Goh Chun Aun , Asas Dunia bosses , to name a few .

During the Financial breakdown in 1996 till 1998 had he followed the IMF recommendations (overturned by TDM to peg our Ringgit at $3.80)our ringgit would have been traded at 5.00ringgit to a USD . That would have been the guillotine for all the Chinese Businesess in Malaysia . Even the small time Chinese business would have to close shop . They would all have become bankrupted!.Everyone in Malaysia would have to undergo tremendous hardships irrespective of races as the economy of the country was still very much in the hands of the Chinese .Any rises in prices would find its way to the consumers .

There are still many many more issues but the present generation of people reading this would not know , thats why we have to be very careful as to who we want as a PM . In fact a lot of young people with very strong anti government feelings should find out why there are people who doesn't like Anwar .

As for the pro-Anwaris , I reckon them to be like the times in Germany before and during the second world war . Where everyone would shout Heil Hitler ! even at a Nazi flag or a photograph of Hitler . They would even go to the extent of prosecuting or reporting their own relatives who dissent to the Gestapo to be executed and shot by firing squad .

  34. Anwar's ambitions override the general moral code. He destroy anything on his path to reach his goal without considering the consequences that may befall the country and people.

His frequent threat to topple the rightful government is not a solution, but a serious problem. Treading into the dangerous water which can bring chaos to the country.

Anyway Anwar does not have any good records to show, he can't manage the country well. He failed the country before as the Financial Minister in 1997 financial crisis as our economy collapsed.

Even If he manage to wrest control of the government, with the loss coalition of PAS, DAP and PKR, each with difference ideology, they will not last.

Which ever way you put it. Anwar will not be an asset, but a liability to the country.

  35. What planned rally ?
(Other than Syed Hamid Albar's delusions)

I'm from Penang, but my PKR contacts in KL were originally planning to go to Ampang Yong Tau Foo for lunch.

    Nobody heard of a rally.

Sounds like some still people take whatever they read in New Slander Times as gospel truth.

  36. Anwar is just a "puppet" of the CROOKS. Imagine getting a red carpet welcome and a tour of the Pentagon in 1998 when his own country torn and tattered by the CROOKS due to his legalising short selling of currency and stocks in 1997. Yes, Anwar is the most despicable traitor the nation ever produced!

I'm sorry to be the one to tell you this but the planned rally was advertised in Ginie Lim's (PKR Media Coordinator) blog.

So who is to blame now? Clearly your KL PKR friends were deemed as irrelevant for the purpose. Just to show their (un)importance in the party.

here's the link just in case you need evidence!

We sent $1 billion cash in a container to Anwar by 4 undercover Syrian businessmen in 1998 and it goes up in smoke! Hope the police dont find any in his premises somewhere.
