But now, it’s clear that this type of school is becoming a favourite choice among Malay and Indian parents.

SJKC Sin Min: A Melaka Chinese School With Majority Of The Students Who Are Malays

Source: Harian Metro

We can see this phenomenon happening in Alor Gajah, Melaka, where SJKC Sin Min is located. The school is the main choice for the parents there, no matter their race. Over the past few years, the school has been receiving more Malay students as compared to their Chinese counterpart.

As mentioned in FMT, the school now has a total of 55 students and only 9 of them are Chinese. For the 2019 school session, the school will have 44 Malay students and 2 Indian students. For Standard One, there will only be one Chinese student compared to 12 Malay students.
UNQUOTE

On a national level the 70/23/7 can happen, provided the government provides full assistance (funds, Chinese language teachers etc) to expand the schools so that that can cater to larger numbers of all communities. With private funding only these schools cannot expand or new ones opened up. There is a critical shortage of Chinese schools in many areas. Today to get your child enrolled there is a waiting list for most Chinese schools. Penang Free School was the first, starting in 1816, meaning they are roughly the same age as the Chinese schools. The standard of education at these mission schools was very high. In the 60s and 70s parents would go to great lengths and make great sacrifices to get their child into a La Salle school. Not any more today. Standards have fallen.

The fate of the Christian schools could not be more different than the Chinese schools.

Their biggest regret, and this was probably because they had no other choice, was to become “nationalised” in 1971. Bereft of funds they had to rely on government money. The churches simply could not afford to run the schools as enrolment grew so fast. They became a victim of their own success. As dedicated religious brothers, nuns etc grew old, retired and passed on there was not enough replacements to make them sustainable. Their character today is not much different than a regular Sekolah Kebangsaan with a Malay name.

The fact that every Education Minister we have ever had was a Muslim may have something to do with this decline.

So don’t make the same mistake with the Chinese schools.TShttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04528899955512771860noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11109306.post-71527586353663856762019-08-19T13:14:15.631+08:002019-08-19T13:14:15.631+08:00The last sentence is only valid when the Chinese s...The last sentence is only valid when the Chinese schools enrollment comprises of 70% Bumiputras, 23% Chinese, and 7% Indians dll.
