Ex-DAP rep claims BN, PN have ‘tacit understanding’ to form state govt

PETALING JAYA: A former DAP assemblyman has called for voters to come out in full force in the Johor state election to prevent Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional from forming the next state government.

Chew Chong Sin claims there is a “tacit understanding” between the two coalitions based on the 33 candidates PN fielded today, China Press reported.

The Johor state polls on July 11 will see 56 seats up for grabs, with 29 needed for a simple majority.


“Parti Wawasan Negara’s decision to sit out the Johor polls will allow BN’s candidates from MCA to secure the non-Malay votes,” he was quoted as saying.

To prevent PN and BN from winning a seat, he said, a voter turnout of 65% to 75% was needed, ensuring that a Pakatan Harapan candidate can win instead.


Chew, a two-term Mengkibol assemblyman, said if a unity government comprising BN and PN representatives was formed, it could lead to conservative policies being implemented that could impact the lives of Johor residents.

“I urge voters in Johor to vote enthusiastically to uphold democratic reform and economic development,” he said.

BN has fielded candidates in all the 56 state seats.

On Wednesday, Johor BN chief Onn Hafiz Ghazi ruled out forming a coalition government with any other party after the election.


Separately, DAP deputy chairman Nga Kor Ming alleged that PN’s decision not to contest the Yong Peng seat meant the coalition was making way for BN in the area, Oriental Daily reported.

Nga said PN has no intention of governing Johor, yet it is prepared to take part in forming the state government.

He said the covert political manoeuvring between PN and BN is obvious.

“Onn Hafiz has repeatedly stated that he will not cooperate with DAP, but has not explicitly ruled out the possibility of working with PN,” he told reporters after an event in Yong Peng today.

The Yong Peng seat was won by BN’s Ling Tiang Soon in the 2022 state election. Ling will defend the seat against PH candidate Yong Hui Yi in a straight fight.
