WASHINGTON, April 23 — US Secretary of the Navy John Phelan will leave office “immediately,” the Pentagon announced Wednesday, without providing an explanation for the sudden exit.

Phelan’s departure follows the removal of top US Army officer general Randy George and two other senior officers earlier this month, at a time when the United States is locked in a war with Iran that still remains unresolved.

Phelan “is departing the administration, effective immediately,” Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said in a statement on X, adding that he would be replaced in an acting capacity by Undersecretary Hung Cao.

Since returning to office early last year, US President Donald Trump has overseen a purge of top military personnel, including the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, general Charles “CQ” Brown, whom he fired without explanation in February 2025.

Other senior officers dismissed include the heads of the US Navy and Coast Guard, the general who headed the National Security Agency, the vice chief of staff of the Air Force, a Navy admiral assigned to NATO, and three top military lawyers.

The chief of staff of the Air Force also announced his retirement without explanation just two years into a four-year term, while the head of US Southern Command retired a year into his tenure.

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has insisted the president is simply choosing the leaders he wants, but Democratic lawmakers have raised concerns about the potential politicization of the traditionally neutral US military.

Last year, the Pentagon chief additionally ordered at least a 20 percent cut in the number of active-duty four-star generals and admirals in the US military, as well as a 10 percent cut in the overall number of general and flag officers. — AFP

  1. Pete Hegseth isn't qualified to run a Nasi Lemak stall, but he's firing highly competent and experienced military leaders left and right to match his boorish vision of the military.

  2. The Role of The Secretary of The Navy is Administrative. Like Recruitment, Training, Equipment, Budget etc.

There is No Impact to the Current Operations in the ME, which comes under the purview of proper military people in CENTCOM.

Hung Cao has a really impressive military background. He's a retired US Navy captain who served more than 30 years, from 1989 to 2021. He started out as an enlisted sailor back in 1989, then graduated from the Naval Academy in 1996 with a degree in ocean engineering. Later he earned a master's in applied physics and did fellowships at MIT and Harvard.

Most of his career focused on special operations as an explosive ordnance disposal officer and deep sea diving officer. He often worked right alongside Navy SEALs and other special forces teams, handling bomb disposal, counter-IED missions, and underwater operations in tough spots. One early highlight was in 1999, when he led the dive team that recovered the bodies of John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife Carolyn, and her sister after their plane crash off Martha's Vineyard.

Cao is a combat veteran with deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Somalia. He spent years disarming roadside bombs and explosive threats on the battlefield, and in his final tour he directed sensitive operations, counter-drone work, and other key tasks for special operations command. He picked up several big awards along the way, including the Bronze Star Medal and the Defense Superior Service Medal.

  7. 🚨 BREAKING: Navy Secretary John Phelan (zero military experience, big donor, Epstein jet frequent flyer) has been fired.

His replacement? Hung Cao an actual Navy Captain who spent 32 years in the military instead of just collecting expensive art and riding on pedo planes.

Progress! We went from “ Epstein’s art dealer” to “real sailor” in one afternoon.

    Only in Trump’s America.

  9. The Acting role is an especially scary figure in Trump World...like Freddy or Jason, it is a nightmare for those trying being tough...

Acting do not have to worry about Congressional approval, just go in and do the tough job of wrecking up the place according to the boss plan, ready for the approved guy.

It is a classic Trump pincer...head I win, tail you lose. If Congress approve, fine. If not, also fine.

  10. Anons know who he is...the guy who was involved in the search and subsequent retrieval and burial at sea for the JFKjr plane, in the cold north Atlantic water, for a loss of 3 persons associated with the family of the 35th US President.

Story that never dies, despite the official publication of events.

Under Secretary Hung Cao will be named the new Acting Secretary of the Navy with the departure of Secretary John C. Phelan today.

My fellow anons know who he is πŸ˜‰

    https://x.com/i/status/2047210138851811506

Yes, he kept the secret for all these years that John Fitzgerald Kennedy Jr, his wife, and his sister in law, are all alive, and they were not on that plane.

He was part of the plan to protect JFK JR and his family, because Hillary Clinton was trying to kill JFK JR because he was running for the senate seat in New York that she wanted and she knew she could never beat JFK JR for that seat.

They put something on the wings of the plane that was gonna make it look like an accident and people that had been looking after JFK JR. for many years caught it before anything bad could happen.

That gave them time to plan for his escape and undoubtedly this man was part of it.

He protected JFK JR and that secret for all of these years.

Well done Sir, well done, congratulations.

My son is a nuclear mechanic in the united states Navy, and I'm happy to see this decision.

I think this is his reward for being so well trusted for all these years, and that it's about time for JFK JR. to come out to the public as himself.

    JFK JR IS ALIVE!!!

The way I heard the story was being the son of a former president his plane was inspected before every flight as the security precaution. One day they found an explosive device that had an altitude detonator. They swapped out the device for one that had a remote detonator. A Navy pilot flew the plane and jumped and set off the bomb.
