PAS MUKTAMAR | PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang today gave a signal that the time has come for the Islamist party to lead Perikatan Nasional and the country.

In his policy speech at PAS’ 71st Muktamar in Kedah, Hadi said the party is prepared to lead Malaysia's pluralistic society and stressed that Islam is the solution for the country's problems.

"PAS is prepared to lead Malaysia with its pluralistic society, upholding the sanctity of the Federal Constitution with the true interpretation of Islam (Ad-Deen), without neglecting the rights and interests of other communities.

"We firmly believe that only Islam with its perfection, justice, and mercy can unite a plural society in harmony and security," he told party delegates and audience present at the venue in Kedah PAS Complex in Alor Setar.

Among those present are leaders of PN component parties, including Bersatu president and PN chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin, opposition chief Hamzah Zainudin, Gerakan president Dominic Lau, and Malaysian Indian People Party (MIPP) president P Punithan.

Hadi, who is Marang MP, made a pledge that PAS will continue to defend the rights of the non-Muslims of the country should it be given the chance to govern.

He said the party will uphold the Islamic principle that there is no compulsion in religion and that it prioritises peace and brotherhood.

"Islam obliges those in power to act justly towards all. Islam permits adherents of other faiths to practice what is permitted by their religions, within the boundaries of safeguarding the sensitivities of Muslims, and Islam commands its followers to respect the sensitivities of non-Muslims," Hadi said.

‘Return to Islam’

Earlier in his speech, the leader presented the muktamar's theme, “return to Islam as the solution”.

He said the country has been witnessing the moral decline of individuals and the disintegration of family institutions, unjust and deceitful politics, economic collapse, and even environmental destruction.

"Politics, which was once a sacred trust, has been reduced to a pursuit of rank and wealth, giving rise to deception, betrayal, and corruption.

"Economic materialism, dictated by desire rather than reason, has become fixated on the monopolisation of wealth, disregarding the distinction between halal and haram, to the extent of neglecting social responsibilities.

"The height of human greed has brought ruin to the environment on both land and sea, sparking excessive wars that devastate the natural world, just as the angels had expressed concern over before the creation of mankind.

"Thus, at this muktamar, we present the theme, 'Return to Islam as the solution'."
